So, this is a review for both books and when the author says she writes villain romances, she means it. This one is pretty dark.
I do think I liked her Masks of Under series more, but this one is still pretty awesome. There were times I really had no idea what the author was planning on doing. I kept second guessing my theories, which made the book even more fun.
I really like that Alice tinkers and is smart. She wants to figure puzzles out, she wants to fix things. She's a great heroine.
Our male lead is... tricky, a puzzle for her to solve, and also maybe not completely sane.
I ended up liking book 1 more than 2 because there is more mystery to it. Book 2 is definitely darker with slower parts and then a quick finish at the end. That end though... I both liked and disliked the ending. I wanted Alice to get away, to show more agency, and yet... I'm glad things went the way they did. Book 1 we are somewhat in the dark with Alice trying to figure things out while Book 2 we see more beneath the puzzle. Watching Alice figure it out and knowing what is going to happen is in itself fun too. I didn't know what to root for at times!

My first book by this author and certainly not the last. An enjoyable read with a good mystery and engrossing characters. Not to mention funny and with A+ banter between the leads. I can’t wait to see how this story concludes in the next book.
Pd: the less you know about it going in, the better. If you’re into paranormal romance and good chemistry and banter, give this one a try.

Illusions of Grandeur is the first in Kathryn Ann Kingsley's The Impossible Julian Strande series and follows the protagonist Alice Munroe as she begins her strange new job as caretaker/groundskeeper/machinist at the strange old Strande Mansion. Julian Strande, a celebrated magician of his time who like many of his contemporaries was rumoured to have sold his soul to the devil to gain real magic, had mysteriously disappeared around a hundred years ago and even though his body was never recovered, the mansion turned museum is believed to have been haunted by his malevolent presence. Alice doesn't believe in the supernatural, even though all the other staff members at the museum tread lightly about the mansion in wariness of its dead owner. However, the longer she works at the puzzlingly constructed and disorienting art deco-style Strande Mansion, and regardless of the distraction her incredibly attractive employer and the dead magician's heir Charles provides, the more she begins questioning everything she thought she knew about the world.
Illusions of Grandeur is classic gothic fiction at its most delightful. The setting of the story provides the reader with the expected cast of a creepy and disorienting large house, strange noises and occurrences, a sinister ghostly presence with a history of rumoured violence, and a rich, attractive male love interest who gives off more than a hint of danger himself. The author uses these genre conventions to provide an incredibly well-written story set in contemporary times that is equal parts intriguing and enchanting.
This is the first book I have read by Kingsley, and I instantly fell in love with the setting, the plot and the premise. The writing is well-paced with just the right amount of occasional breathlessness (for various reasons *wink wink*). The descriptions of the world the story is set in, i.e., the Strande Mansion, is well-thought out enough to engage the reader and only furthers the intrigue of the story, without overwhelming with details. I found the female lead's persona somewhat understated, even though most of the novel unfolds from her perspective, though I can see how it would be hard to outshine an absolutely larger-than-life character like the impossible magician. I did appreciate the subtle shifts and developments that the characters undergo in their personality, and the empathy with which the writer draws out even side characters who do not get as much space in the story otherwise. I found this to be an extremely enjoyable and well-balanced read overall.

Why did I read all of this??? This is one of those books where the FMC spends ages questioning all of the weird and creepy things that keep happening to her, and then deciding to just ignore it and go about her business....over and over and over again. I like a villainous MMC, but not when that means he's just a jerk to the FMC while she allows things to happen to her.
4.5. Trigger Warning: Depression and Suicide
Illusions of Grandeur is unlike any book I have read to date. The characters are so complex and compelling. I can't wait to read more of this unique story.

So far I have read two books where Kingsley's obvious love for Alice in Wonderland is used as a blueprint; I loved it the first time - and I love it now. Alice quite literally stumbles on wonderland hiding behind the great big and little doors of the Strande Estate.
With a cat named Loki by her side (how fitting because trickery is afoot), Alice dives headfirst into a dizzying hot adventure with a ghost and a hot alive person.
Two Sentences, A Scene or less - Characters:
Oh damn, Charles Monroe is one sweet cuddlebug sexy MF, with a dirty sense of humor, gorgeous, likes pets oh ... and what else, what else, goes to therapy or at least he knows, his faults and I'm missing something - ah yes, alive with a pulse. First thing I’m going to say is I absolutely loved this book!! I also definitely recommend reading it! I was pulled in from the start, and as soon as Charles made his appearance I was instantly in love, he is deliciously dark and twisted and his humor sometime literally made me laugh out loud like a crazy person. This was the first book I’ve read in terms of hauntings and ghosts, and I feel the story flowed together great. As I got closer to the end I had my “I knew it!” moment after I read what I think was the plot twist. I also loved the character development, and reading/listening to how Alice process the different situations she’s presented with. I am totally counting down the days till the second book come out so I can get back to Mr. Dark and twisted (my new favorite type lol)
