Updated review (March 2024):

This was my lowest ranked SJM book on my first read, and while it is staying in place (purely because everything else is SO MUCH BETTER), I definitely appreciated it more the second time around. ToG Dorian and Chaol are frankly underrated, imo, and Nehemia grew on me here too. I’ve never been a huge rereader, but I’m starting to think that for SJM it is almost crucial—there are just so many small details that you only pick up with a second look.

Lastly, just screaming this from the rooftops one more time…READ THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE FIRST. I intentionally tallied and every SINGLE major reveal from that is spoiled if you start with this book instead. It truly boggles my mind that anyone could advocate a different reading order for first time readers (and yes, I am directing this towards SJM herself as well).

Original review (March 2023):

Rating: 4/5 stars.

Really good but honestly not great? If you compare it to the later books this is much slower and harder to get into. But it’s still very fun, and VERY worth it for what will come.

Extremely addicting book, though the writing at first feels very "I'm not like other girls" vibes. It got better, however, and honestly was quite a good listen. It felt cheesy and kind of kitchy, but honestly loveable in that kind of silly way.

Unique in some ways, but felt very much like the Tamora Pierce Tortall universe, both in writing and character development (and even plot, now thinking about it more). Fun in a way that isn't complicated.

I'd recommend this book for YA audiences, or adults who don't mind the mushy feelings of youth.

I love that the book has an overly talented female main character *and* that she is extremely unique in her talents and backstory.

A great book. Celaena is a great character, the story is very interesting to read. Can’t wait to read the other books of “Throne of Glass”.

An assassin, a bunch of thieves, and ex military personnel have to battle it out to become the king’s champion (aka the kings assassin). During this drawn out battle, someone seems to be targeting the contenders, leading to violent deaths. This book fits in the mystery, fantasy, dystopian, and romance genres!

This is my third time reading Throne of Glass and it’s always such a fun book.

I have given it 3 stars, and while some may think that’s because I’m not too keen on it, that is entirely not the case! I really love this book, however I know what’s coming up, and in comparison to the sequels, Throne of Glass isn’t as good, hence the 3 stars.

Celaena is honestly the love of my life, she’s sassy and girly while also being badass and dangerous. It’s not very often that we get a protagonist that is obsessed with clothes and can kill a man a thousand different ways.

Between Celaena, Chaol, Dorian and Nehemia, I love the characters in this series!
