I don’t think Emily comes across best in anthology reading.

I started reading this after watching the show “Dickinson” which I absolutely loved. I’m not a huge poetry person but the dark themes in Emily’s writing drew me in. I also found the glimpse into 19th century New England to be interesting.

I’m Nobody! Who are you?
Are you - Nobody - Too?
Then there’s a pair of us?
Don’t tell! they’d advertise- you know!
How dreary - to be - Somebody!
How public - like a Frog -
To tell ones name - the livelong June -
To an admiring Bog!
She even referenced Charlotte Brontë which was a nice surprise. It’s crazy to imagine the Brontës and Emily alive at the same time but living across the world from each other.

All overgrown by cunning moss,
All interspersed with weed,
The little cafe of “Currer Bell”
In quiet “Haworth” laid.
Gathered from many wanderings-
Gethsemane can tell
Thro’ what transporting anguish
She reached the Asphodel!
Soft fall the sounds of Eden
Upon her puzzled ear-
Oh what an afternoon for Heaven,
When “Brontë” entered there!

”Surgeons must be very careful
When they take the knife!
Underneath their fine incisions
Stirs the Culprit - Life!”

Not the style I connect with most naturally, but there are some good ones in here.

Great as usual. I never realized how much I love her rhythm. She drops you off in the middle of nowhere without a map of compass and expects you to find your way by interpreting the shape of a cloud. That’s what it feels like, anyway. I’m here for it.

Emily Dickinson is a wonderful genius

Third and final series of Dickinson poetry sees more similar poems, but this collection also seemed to be more focussed on eternity and the beyond.
This was probably the pick of the three series.
Dickinson always has something interesting to say in her poetry though, whether we hear it or not is another matter.
