If you’re looking to *feel* the immigrant struggle and the ups and downs of being a dreamer in America then this is the book for you! No book I’ve read so far describes the anguish of trying to belong in a nation that doesn’t want to include you in its conversations. The whole book will keep you on the edge of your seat figuring out if Qian (Julie) and her Ma Ma and Ba Ba make the “American Dream” come true for them.

4.8/5. love the way she writes. a sad story, difficult to read at times, of the struggles of an immigrant Chinese family living in NYC. makes you grateful for what you have.

Eye opening. The author is close to my son's age. Their childhood experiences were worlds apart. The poverty described harkens back to the Irish immigrants coming to NYC in the 1800's and the extreme poverty they experienced. The fact that this was still occurring in the 1990's is shocking to me. How did I not know this.
