The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen

The Pout-Pout Fish is always frowning! Many of his ocean friends try to cheer him up, but only a silvery, shimmering fish can turn his frown around.

It has a good rhythm, and the potential theatrics for the "Blub, bluuuub, bluuuuub" sections could be incredibly amusing to children. I could see parents being worried about the message regarding boundaries/consent and masking our true feelings. I will probably not use it in storytime for that reason.

A cute story about a fish with a pouty face. I felt sorry for him. He felt like he couldn't be anything else until a little something happens for him at the end. It read nice and rhymed. I think some kids who like sea animals will giggle at this one.

Cute, rhyming children's book. Only four stars because the ending was a little weak.

Lovely illustrations, as a diver I particularly appreciate them. Fun rhymes and repetition, which children will enjoy. Slight problem with the ending - randomly kissing complete strangers could be considered problematic in today's social climate, but overall a cute story.

I have young twin boys who get a story every night, so we try to get a good selection from the library. This is one that has passed the twins test and will have to be purchased for our home library.

It's sing-songy and has a repeated refrain which the boys love, and the pictures are active enough that they are not always reaching to turn the page, they actually look at the pictures as we read.

It only gets four stars instead of five because the ending is a little weak.

The story is this: A Pout-Pout fish is bringing everyone around him down. Each of his friends ask him to cheer up in a different way. He keeps saying that he's a Pout-Pout fish, and that's just the way he is. Until one day a beautiful fish he's never seen before swims over and gives him a kiss on his pouting lips. Ta-da! Now he's happy and a Kiss-Kiss fish. *smooch*

The rhymes are fun, but this seems like a horrible consent lesson to be teaching little kids.
