Like everyone else, I love Alan Rickman - and this was an interesting look into his life, both public and inner. A complicated man with complicated thoughts - but I guess that describes most of us. Many touching details and I enjoyed it.
I love Alan Rickman, but I couldn’t listen to 19 hours of his day-to-day meetings, etc.
I love Alan but it was like reading someone’s calendar. There were some fun bits when he was filming movies. Loved his thoughts on meeting Alanis Morissette during Dogma, but I skimmed so much.
Less of what you’d think of as a traditional diary and more of short notes per day, so a lot of course is out of context. Just not quite what I was expecting but still interesting to read a little of Alan’s life. Gone too soon.
Going in, we knew it's not a memoir or autobiography....it's a diary with just a few words or sentences in the various days. I wish we could have had a memoir as so much is left out. I would have loved so much more info, thoughts, feelings, etc. However, the thoughts, feelings etc he did provide were sharp, insightful, and sometimes very blunt.
Why would anyone publish someone's diary entries without knowing if they wanted them published? Alan Rickman was an amazing man but it's not like he was Anne frank. Id be mad. After I read where it said we do not know if Alan wished to have his diaries published i was like wtf. Also I started the first year and it is literally in diary format. I don't know a lot of the actors or directors. I'm good. Yall can read a man's published diary on your own.
How do you talk about a book you were never meant to read?
Honestly, this felt mostly like voyeurism. I did not like the editing AT ALL. It wasn't clear what the editing choices had been so you didn't know if swathes were missing or not. The editors notes were incredibly inconsistent, dull and unhelpful.
The brief glimpses we were allowed of the actual diaries (beautifully illustrated) made me feel I was missing the bigger picture. They were clearly not meant to just be text.
Mostly it left me bereft and wanting to watch Rickman's entire back catalogue

Sorry, but this was just boring.
Not blaming Rickman though. These were his private diaries, and most likely weren’t written with the intention of being published.
