DID NOT FINISH

DNF: 10% in and I can’t get into it. Tried audiobook and reading it. Choppy, no context, read like someone’s notes to self that made no sense to me as an outsider.

An interesting read, marred only by the admission that the journals were not necessarily meant for public consumption. It was a lot like visiting a museum — there are many things you don’t understand or lack context for, but every once in a while there is a touchstone that gets you back on track.

One of my Christmas presents (from Emma).

An absolutely fascinating portrait of a very complex man. At turns endlessly loyal and generous in his friendship but also unshakably critical of people (especially himself) artistically and scathing in his disdain for and frustration with the business side of acting.

The most surprising thing I wouldn’t have ever guessed going in were that he was very close friends with Ruby Wax for most of his life. They seem, superficially, so completely different!

The last year’s worth of entries were difficult to read knowing that he died at the beginning of 2016. I remember hearing the news that he’d died and being really shocked. He was one of those actors who was excellent in every role he took, whether the movie was any good or not.

A great read which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I don't know that this was worth publishing or reading. I assume people want to read this as they have enjoyed Rickman as an actor, I being one of them. However, this is not worth reading.

just lazily giving you the diary entries to read through does not work for me as a memoir. there is hardly anything compelling to pull from reading about him going to the gym and meeting with an entrail of initals. would've rather they worked it into a biography so that you might savour those thoughts that really tell you something profound about who he was and what he did.
