The fact that this is a debut novel is amazing, writing a book that spans over 8 generations is impressive. There were scenes where I was on the edge of my seat for what happened next, I think this book has incredibly well-written characters.

If you enjoy historical fiction or just incredible writing in general, I would recommend this book. If you're not comfortable reading about slavery, racism, violence, or drug use then you may want to skip this one.

The snapshots of lives you see in this book are fascinating. I enjoy the way this story was told, snapshots of one person in each generation, making it easier to see the progression of time while also allowing the reader to compare and contrast each generation. The struggles each generation experience are so different, yet so similar. It got me thinking about my own ancestors and everything they experienced to get me here and how their choices (or even lack of choice) affected my current life.
