I have trouble thinking what I want to say about this book.

On the one hand, it was very well written, the way that Anne Rice does well.

On the other hand, the story wasn't all that intriguing to me. It is essentially the tale of an assassins struggle over his soul and faith in God. I remember reading that Rice "found religion" and the controversy over what it would do to her writing. This book is the sum of those fears.

It is the start of a series, but not one I will continue.

I think that I might also be over the technique of having a 'bad' character as the protagonist whom we are to love and pity, who is writing his life story. It works for Vampire Chronicles, but to keep using it feels lazy and overdone.

Benefit of the doubt, 3 stars.

Loved the character of Toby O’Dare. Wish the “mechanics” behind “Angel Time” had been more fleshed out. The details of Toby O’Dare’s past life and the story of Fluria and Meir were beautifully done. The ending doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the story. Liked this, didn’t LOVE it.

Anne Rice has been one of my favorite authors since I was a kid. I started reading the witch and vampire books when I was just 12 or something. Now she's starting a new series, and this is book #1. It's about a hit man who is visited by an angel, and recruited by him. There is your typical Anne Rice type stuff - New Orleans, tragedy, descriptions of places, churches, clothes, and the particular way that the people are, are just like the witches and vampires were. We also travel around in time. I read and liked the Jesus book, but this is more like the usual ones. It was really short though. I feel like she could have added on another book, or maybe I'm used to her books being really long (or maybe they just seemed really long?) but I felt just when I was really getting into it, it ended. I'm excited to see at the end, that the next volume comes out november 2010, which it is now, so yay. I'm hoping the next one will be twice as long as this one.

This was a wonderful read, but if you are looking for a typical Anne Rice book you won't find much of that here. The descriptive nature is still there, but on the lighter side of the paranormal. A breath of fresh air. I was very skeptical at first, but truly enjoyed it!

Unfortunately this piece was not as entertaining as Rice's other works and is clearly influenced by her reintroduction to Christianity. However her style and eloquence remains strong so it's definitely worth a read if you're a fan of Rice or interested in Christian fiction.
