I've wanted to read this book for years now. I read through the first couple of pages when I still worked at my old bookstore but didn't get far. Seeing it available in the library was a thrilling surprise and I immediately snatched it up.
While this is a retelling of Hosea and his wife, it isn't exactly the same. With Hosea's situation, he married a prostitute so his life could act as a visual symbol of God's relationship with the people of Israel. In this version, I feel like the purpose was to focus on Michael and Angel/Sarah specifically, though their relationship did affect others around them. I definitely still felt some parallels in their relationship to God and His people, but I feel like that was more for the reader than any of the characters in the novel.
What I liked about this novel was how it touched on a lot of issues that are still going on today. The whole victim-blaming thing, for example, like how Angel/Sarah constantly blamed herself for all the things that happened to her. I like how the novel dealt with that and how Angel/Sarah eventually overcame those feelings and understood the truth of the situation. I also liked that it wasn't just man-saves-woman, but also a woman saving a man and Angel not being the only character who went through a redemption process.
Overall it was a good book and I'm glad I finally got to read it. Usually I hate romances that involve love at first sight, and I admit it did bug me a little when Miriam set her sights on Paul and decided she loved him without really getting to know him. But the real romance of the novel was God romancing Angel/Sarah, and that is a love story I will always root for.

This was an Audible freebie I was not expecting to be so good. It had the premise of Christian romance but really it was a sweet, clean romance where you totally get hooked. It was easy to fall in love with the characters and it’s a super enjoyable listen.
