Love this book! The last chapter or two plus the epilogue goes extremely fast compared to the rest of the book. It gave a weird flow so that’s why I gave it 4 not 5 stars.

Overflowing with parallelism, allusions, and intertextuality that work together to create an emotional journey, both for the characters within and the reader without, this is an exemplary novel about agape love. Though the primary and secondary Altman storylines remain a little too long, almost hindering plot progression and, objectively, potential readership theretofore, it is this very con of River's writing that parallels reality, transmorphing the reader into an external protagonist, reflective of Angel's emotional decisions to leave (due to lack of change in Self; though in the context of the reader, it is due to lack of change in story progression, not Self). Ultimately, this literary weakness works as a strength for Rivers as it paradoxically drives the story forward, and the reader along with it - a more personal understanding of the protagonist in tow. I loved this book! I laughed, shouted in anger, cried from deep sadness AND joy... It was a journey. A heartbreakingly beautiful one.

As someone who is not religious in any sense I very much enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed reading a book set in the 1850's and I feel like I learned a lot about that time period through this book. I loved how gently and patient Micheal was with Angel and those around him. I really loved how he respected Angels choices when it came to herself and religion and allowed her to find her own path when it came to that. This was a very inspiring story by the end I grew to really appreciate Angel/Sarah and the way she was able to help herself by helping those around her.
