TL;DR

Really plain language and too many used fantasy tropes. I was looking so much forward to a good vampire story but this was fun in no ways to me

The story is a 5-star tale. The art choice is such a weird juxtaposition that for me it costs a star. They simply tell different tales and it jarred the entire way. It'd be like having Frazetta provide the interiors for THE KITE RUNNER. Very distracting, pulling away from what truly is an awesomely delightful story of terrible darkness. Grim darkness that is not grimdark. A protagonist who is 'no fucking hero' except when he is. Bloody, very bloody, and terrific battles and moments of inspiring emotions from brotherly love to faith to loyalty to hate to desire to love.

This book kept me reading for long periods and returning each day as soon as able. THAT is good storytelling of a tale well-told. I truly look forward to the next installment.

3.75 stars!

I finally finished this MASSIVE TOME OH MY GOSH 750+ PAGESSSSSS
this is the longest book I've ever read. Maybe big books aren't for me??? lol.

This book is a grimdark, angsty, epic fantasy ride. We are hearing the tale of Gabriel de León, the last Silversaint, as he recounts his brutal battle against a vampire empire that has plunged the world into eternal night. There are beautiful illustrations scattered throughout this novel, which really help enhance that tortured, Gothic atmosphere. Although the story was interesting and the characters dynamic, this book was sooooo long!! 750+ pages...Jay Kristoff could have definitely halfed this chonky boy, and I probably would have enjoyed it more if he did. Still worth the read though! I'm curious to find out what happens next with Gabriel.

There were some pretty fun plot twists at the end as well! I was shook to learn that Gabriel sister was actually that sketchy vampire following them around?! I wonder how they will work together in book 2. Are all vampires actually bad or can some maybe be converted into good and work with to empower the humans or at least become neutral?? I feel bad that the humans just indisciminately kill all vampires. Is there a way to live in peace with them I wonder?

I also really was shook that Chloe wanted to kill Dior?? Kinda wild but is it bad I understand both sides of the argument? Killing one person to save millions is immoral but Chloe is only doing what her faith tells her too. But at the same time I'm glad Gabriel saved Dior cause she doesn't deserve a fate like that. There has to be some other way to end the endless night. Chloe I think was too blinded by the phrophecy and faith to see what she was doing was wrong and she should have found an alternative that didn't involve murdering an innocent 16 year old.

Also I like that Dior is a girl. Major say. lol

Omg the image of Gabriel's happy family after learning about how they were tragically and brutually murdered was so so sadddd. I understand why Gabriel is such an asshole now. He truly has lost all faith in a higher power after everything he loved was stolen from him and murdered right in front of him. Still....I don't like how mean and asshole he is to the priest guy in their band. Like when the priest guy is literally dying he tells him "Where is your God now" ?!?! Like goodness sakes Gabriel time and placeeeee.

But anyways yeah I'll continue with the series but...why she gotta be so long ;(( lol.
Maybe long books just aren't for me. One of the main things keeping me going through this tome was the illustrations so shout out to the illustrator Bon Orthwick... you're the goat lol

I adore this cranky 30 something year old man and his girl sidekick that he would kill for. I love this whole story so much and can't wait to continue the trilogy.
