This was my least favorite book in the entire Will Trent series. I hated the back and forth, back and forth.. Eh! I'm so glad I'm finished with it.

I did love the moments between Will and Sara though. And I loved the tender moments between Amanda and Will.

Will thinks he's not good enough for Sara or anyone else -- but he's surrounded by a very strong support system! I hope he realizes that one day.

#StoryGraph: fiction crime mystery thriller
448 pages • first pub 2012

Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him.

Then a local college student goes missing, and Will is inexplicably kept off the case by his supervisor and mentor, deputy director Amanda Wagner. Will cannot fathom Amanda's motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons.

Decades before, when his father was imprisoned for murder, this was Will's home. It appears that the case that launched Amanda's career forty years ago has suddenly come back to life-and it involves the long-held mystery of Will's birth and parentage. Now these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed.

I LOVED the forensic talk in this one, there was a lot more than the usual.

It took six books, but backstory! We get backstory on Will, more than we had been given. We get back story on Amanda Wagner, who I figured we'd never get backstory on. This book is primarily set in the past through Amanda's POV (another thing I wasn't thinking would happen)

I love the Will Trent stories and this one has all the juice on his mom and Amanda. Multiple timelines, if you have read them out of order it explains a lot but there’s enough story that it stands alone too.
