Just reread this and found it even more meaningful now that I'm a bit older and anticipating the age and stage Frank Bascombe describes here. The greatest strength of Ford's writing is how he stretches time to make a holiday weekend feel so epic, while drawing you so deeply into his protagonist's life.

Sure, it's well-written, and yes, it sounds like what I imagine a mid-life crisis to sound like, but, after spending 30 pages describing a scene where he's trying to sell a house, Frank Bascombe says, "It might be of some interest to say how I came to be a Residential Specialist..."

And that, really, is how the rest of the book goes; Frank assuming we, the reader, will find interest in every mundane, minute observation he has as a well-off middle-aged suburbanite divorcee.
