The ONLY reason I'm still reading this series and therefore rated it a 2 was because of the plot.  I like the political intrigue and need to know how things get resolved in the end.  But this is an erotic book and I found myself dreading each and every one of the sex scenes.

I almost DNF'd the book at three separate points.  And I've never DNF'd a book.  First
when Embry rescued Greer from Carpathia.  That whole scene was just unbelievable and an absolutely appalling place to insert a sex scene. A man who claims to love her would get her out of harm's way before anything else could hurt her.  They would not have stuck around to have sex in the kidnapping location. The bad guys could have come back at any point and caught them both. If you really want to have them have sex at that point, get them out of the situation first and back to neutral territory.  But that aside, I think it was a horrible reasoning and just an excuse to insert more smut into the story.  Not to mention a good way to ruin the only character I liked from the first book.

And then I about DNF'd again in Chapter 19.
When Embry wanted to stay secretive about their relationship (after talking to Merlin), Ash didn't handle it well and hit and essentially raped Embry. Simone made it seem like Embry wanted it, but it felt very domestic violence meets Stockholm Syndrome to me. So while it wasn't technically rape, it still gave me the ick.

The third almost DNF spot was chapter 21.
Speaking of domestic violence meets Stockholm Syndrome, the whole scene with Ash beating Greer with the braided part of the riding crop was not teasing erotic play but full blown DV in my opinion. That man is unhinged and belongs in a therapist's office, not the White House.

If this series continues with the pattern of a different person's POV with each book, I'm really dreading book 3.  I do not want to be in the head of that monster. But I'm also conflicted and want to know how the political intrigue concludes. So while I'll probably read it (since I already own it anyway), I will read it with all the enthusiasm of reading my calculus textbook from college.
