Definitely higher stakes than Book 1, this one felt grittier and filthier and honestly I'm anxious from it. I feel silly being this invested in a Kindle Unlimited trashy romance novel, but the characters are so beautifully, horribly intertwined (literally, sometimes--some of the stuff they get up to is downright acrobatic), and the emotional depth to these character's struggles and backstories is so rich that I forget that this is lowkey just smut with a plot. This book, at least, felt a lot more plot-heavy than Book 1.

Main issues keep coming back to
the characterization of Abilene. This character is arguably a horrible person and has been for years, and Greer just keeps like, forgetting the horrible stuff she did? She literally sells her cousin/best friend to a hostile nation to be raped!!! because she's jealous that Greer married the guy she had a crush on in high school. And Greer realizes Abi is behind it within the first couple of chapters and is still like, oh well, I don't want to accuse her of something this bad! That would be rude :/"

I also hate  hate hate the trope of miscommunication but the author pulls it off so damn well in this series so far--like yes, could things be better if the characters were upfront and honest about their problems and feelings? Yes but as the author points out, if they hadn't suffered in silence for literal years there wouldn't be a story to tell. My other main criticism is just that I'm not into BDSM lol, I find the pain and submission part offputting and it makes it hard to keep reading through the smutty chapters, but I literally knew what I was getting into when I read the second book in a series about a damn BDSM reverse harem.

I really liked this book! I was scared I wouldn't relate because male pov, but the context from the last story really helped and the main character really came to life for me.

This author is really good at physically centering me in the story and tugging on my heartstrings
