The love story is the strength of this book. I loved the characters and there are so many quotes I will save from this book. I did not enjoy the slow pace but rushed stories (?), if that makes sense. It was hard to visualize certain action scenes. It felt like reading subtitles of an action movie sometimes. It’s a beautiful story overall.  Where the Lost Wander was slow moving and tragically eventful at the same time.

This book follows the love story of Naomi, a white woman, and John, a half Native American half white man, as they join a group to travel the Oregon Trail in the 1850s. Times were hard, this was a laborious and deadly trip, but they were all looking for a new life. Along the way, John and Naomi become closer and have to fight through some pretty intense battles to keep themselves and their family together.

This isn't a typical Valentine's Day read, but at its core, this is a story about love. Naomi May and her family are venturing on the Oregon Trail headed for California. Before they set off, they buy some mules from John Lowery, who Naomi immediately forms a connection with. Though the development of their love story is quick at the beginning (as with most historical fiction novels), there is very much underlying tensions and strains that draws out their story and kept me hooked. Tragedy strikes in the middle of the journey west, and John and Naomi must find their ways back to each other.

John is half Pawnee and half white, which I thought was a very interesting development that allowed this book to explore both sides of history. Both John and Naomi were such capable characters and smartly written. Overall, a surprisingly good read! This book had been on my shelf forever and was kinda hard to find, so I felt like it was definitely worth the effort.
