This was one of the first Discworld books I had trouble finishing. Our heroes have seen more than most even before we meet them, war is dark and cruel, and the history of belittling and erasing women still stings as much now as it did 20-plus years ago. I love where this book ends up, but it was a hard road to get there.

This was a good book, hell it was probably a FANTASTIC book but I think I read it at the wrong time. As this series goes on (I'm reading it chronologically) it seems to be taking its self more seriously and getting more away from the humor of the earlier books which is what attracted me to discworld in the first place.

That being said, I really do think this was a great story poking fun at war and its absurdities as well as sexism both within and out of the military. The cast of characters was fun, but I was just really bored.

That last line though, made me a bit weepy.
