I read this after remembering someone's remark that the protagonist was transgender-coded. I'm inclined to agree to a certain extent, but I say this with a shaker's worth of salt.

This book is unfortunately rife with "man in a dress" jokes, down to multiple characters making pointed remarks about the only trans woman in the book -- who is only mentioned in passing, not even counted among the cast.

While there were thoughtful critiques about gender roles and bioessentialism throughout the book, it seems that all points made are framed in the context of first-wave feminism's advocacy for formal equality. And the impact of the arguments are undercut with the sheer volume of transmisogynistic gags.

You may have a female protagonist who questions whether she identifies as female or male or even both,
but in the end the only impact on gender roles relative to her country's military is that women can be soldiers and a uniform with a skirt is available. It is not implied in any way that men may wear skirts without judgment. Only masculine crossdressing is allowed, it seems.

I don't believe I'll be picking up this book again any time soon.
