This was my first introduction to Discworld, and I fell in love almost instantly! Pratchett is an incredible author with such a sense of humor and adventure, and his writing brings every character to life.

This story follows a headstrong Polly Perks as she enters the army in search of her lost brother. With women forbidden from joining the army (among a long list of other things that women are forbidden to do), Polly decides to cut her hair, change her mannerisms, and assume the identity of Oliver. "Oliver" joins the Monstrous Regiment.

The story is funny and exciting with a lot of heartfelt moments laced in. Identity, societal restrictions, the ridiculous nature of war, connection through shared feelings of isolation - there are a lot of big topics woven into what at first seems a lighthearted and funny story about a bunch of misfits coming together.

A great novel that pokes fun at the military complex and gender roles. People who are looking for Pratchetts reoccuring characters will be a bit disappointed, but shouldn't discount this novel any less.
