"Monstrous Regiment" is Pratchett saying "yay, trans rights" without actually saying that. It is a novel about the military, about gender, about responsibility and the futility of war. It was incredibly funny and also deeply touching. You can read this one without having read any previous Discworld novels but it does make more sense if you have some idea of the main characters and the world building even though Vetinari, de Worde, Angua and Sam Vimes only play minor roles. Cross-dressing women joining the military to make sense of the world, very Shakespearean, I like it. 5 stars
