A book so effortlessly funny that it almost forgets to be heartfelt and quite serious, until it does.
I haven't read others in Discworld yet, but going by this one it seems sir Pratchett did not intend that to be necessary (though I now certainly intend to make an effort in such regards regardless).

A fascinatingly subversive book, in the end, but it was a rough go getting there.
This is really a good gateway book to Pratchett. Almost all of the mainstay characters have a walk on role but this book is so good it stands alone. The biting humor is there along with the wry commentary on life but ask always Pratchett's lovable, realistic characters are the things you walk away remembering. This was just so good.

My first Pratchett in almost five years, and a great return to form. Many chuckles were had, and some honest-to-god guffaws as well. A very funny, very queer exploration of military culture and nationalism.

Reading this book feels very timely. Nuggan's abominations feel too familiar.
Pratchett, as always, shows that he has a deeper understanding of the word than most others, and he presents in a hilarious and absurd way.
