This was a fun detour from my usually fantasy-heavy reading list. It's very meta, and at times the framing device irritated me, but it does pay off. I don't think it will particularly stick with me but it was a good read for cross-country flight!

This was an ok book. I enjoyed the mystery and how the 4 were brought together, and I actually did enjoy the subplot with the emails. However I think the email thing could have been more interesting and drawn out because it felt resolved quite quickly. In terms of the mystery, I liked it although I had a suspicion of who it might be. It wasn’t the best mystery ever but an easy read.

I feel pretty neutral towards this book. I liked the writing a lot and the way there were dueling plots. But some things irked me like Marigold and Whit. They were both obnoxious, a little ridiculous, and Marigold was downright creepy. I could tell I was supposed to like them and I simply couldn't stand either of them. I also was able to predict the ending pretty easily so it kinda fell flat for me. But I didn't quite understand the last sentence which was intriguing. Overall, mostly fun with some annoyances.

I thought the meta-narrative was intriguing. It helped me appreciate some of the subtleties that I missed but also made me question the three layers of story going on at once. Definitely kept me on my toes!
Would recommend! Likeable cast of characters, a decent sense of place, and I enjoyed how self-aware the book was.

This took me a little while to get into, mostly because I find books about authors/writing irritating. However, as the story went on and the purpose of the little editorial bits became apparent I enjoyed it a lot more.

Interesting structure that blurs conventional expectations of storytelling - an author’s fan writes to her and is soon invited to give feedback on her newest novel about a murder uncovered in a library that four strangers decide to investigate.
Switching back & forth from the increasingly outspoken letter-writer and the presumed novel chapters was sometimes a bit jarring, and a few details felt too-quickly thrown into place by the end.
