Lieutenant Dallas is faced with the mysterious brutal murder of a young maid working at one of Roarke's hotels. The severity and cruelty of the crime is confusing to Dallas, as the maid had no connections that would appear to warrant such a death.
When another worker of Roarke, a young publisher, is killed, Dallas suspects someone trying to target and manipulate Roarke.
One of Roarke's old friends has 'arisen from the dead' after faking his death many years ago, wanting to organise a business deal with Roarke. Dallas is suspicious of his slightly shady friend, though Roarke is unconcerned.
Dallas investigates the distinctive murders (beatings, rape and a silver rope to choke the victim) and finds similar cases all over the world. They clearly tie back to a hired assassin, Yost, and the obviousness of the murderer is another confirmation to Dallas that someone is out to unnerve Roarke.
Dallas and her team investigate all leads that may take them to Yost, and then find out that the FBI also have a strong interest in the murder that has a record over 20 years long.
When Dallas' team prepares to capture Yost, they are pushed aside by the FBI, who ultimately lose him.
Meanwhile, Dallas begins to suspect another motive for the killings, which have nothing to do personally with Roarke. Roarke is hosting a billion-dollar auction for a friend of his at one of his hotels, and Dallas suspects that her son is planning a heist to sell of her assets. He has spent all his inheritance and is in debt.
Dallas confronts him, and he confesses all, though he has not realised that his co-conspirators have hired Yost to distract Roarke from security details for the auction.
Roarke realises that the heist could only be pulled off by a few talented people, and when he confronts his friend about it, he confesses to planning to break into his hotel. Roarke lets his friend leave, and Dallas is furious. (Sideline: Peabody and McNab have a huge fight over their exclusivity, and 'break up' with each other)
From the help of Peabody's LC friend, they are able to track Yost and ultimately capture him when he goes to a jeweller's to purchase more silver. Dallas gives the collar to the FBI agent who wanted the credit and the revenge for her murdered friend. However, before Dallas is able to question him herself, he kills himself.
Roarke now knows most of the plans for the heist, so Dallas' team monitor the hotel and are able to capture all the members of the heist. Unfortunately, Roarke's friend is killed when he steps in front of a knife intended for Roarke. Case closed.

It was ever the brilliant read, as Eve and the wannabe Cop Rourke try to track down a rich Murderer who Strangles his victims among other things.

When things get a bit closer to home all hands are on deck!

Throw in Peabody and Mcnaabs romantic escapees making Peabodys humor to Eves dryness

The one where a series of murders increasingly closer to Roarke is a set up for a distraction for a major heist after an old friend comes back into Roarke’s life.

I loved Magda.

Eve laughed. “That’s probably mean.”
“Oh, probably. But where’s the fun in talking about people if you only say nice things?

Also Eve’s maternal instincts are hilarious.

“Yes.” Mira sighed, dabbed at her eyes. “There’s nothing like a new life coming into the world to remind us why we’re here. The hope and the possibilities.” Eight pounds, was all Eve could think. It must be like passing an arena ball with limbs.

Roarke and Eve are back to their lovely banter.

“We run this by the book.”
“I’ve always wondered. How many pages are in that book of yours?”
“And smart mouthing to the primary can result in disciplinary action.”
“Darling. You know how that excites me.”

Magda speaks for us all when she says
“Eve, I’ll have to confess to being desperately in love with your husband. I hope you don’t arrest me for it.”

Took a million books to get to one in which Eve is not a horrible person. Finally.

An amazing book like the rest of the series!

I just can't get enough of Eve and Roarke... Even if all the murders in this books are giving me the chills!
