I started off really enjoying this but felt the middle 150 pages or so could've been edited out - felt like it was dragging so much and as exciting as all the espionag-ey international travel was, it started to leave me a bit cold. By the time the 206 incident occurred i couldn't have cared less and just wanted to the book to end.

The writing is beautiful and the idea unique but I just found the story dragged and I couldn't get into it.

I didn’t actually finish this book because 150 pages in and I felt like the same thing happened repeatedly. People forget her moments after they have met, she uses this to her advantage to step things but ultimately is struggling that she has no deep relationships. It was depressing actually.

Too drawn out to be five stars. But well written and original.

I really wanted to like this book... but it could have been 100 pages shorter.

“Do I care that the only way to be free from the fear of surveillance is to be absolutely harmless? To conform to a sociological norm, and never say anything that is personal, or real, or half thought through, or challenging?”

If I could rate on premise alone, I’d give The Sudden Appearance of Hope a 5, but unfortunately the pesky story part of the novel didn’t work for me. I really wanted to like it. A woman who nobody can remember. People forget her within moments of meeting her. She becomes a world-class thief. Danger ensues as she takes on a massive corporation devoted to making people “perfect.”

Claire North explores some really interesting ideas in the book, but I felt ideas got more treatment than plot, and, more importantly, than character. Pages are devoted to exploring the same ideas over and over again, but I never felt any closer to understanding who Hope was.

I think Claire North has some super cool ideas though, and I enjoyed The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, so I’d definitely give a future book a try.

4.5 stars

Fascinating and engrossing, highly recommended
