I loved this book. I marked so many pages to look at again because they contained beautiful, insightful, and powerful lines such as:
"Causes are sometimes blind, they say. Sometimes people are hurt in the fight for freedom."
I've read another book by Claire North, [b:The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August|20706317|The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August|Claire North|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1407712314s/20706317.jpg|25807847], and also heavily enjoyed that one. After reading the premise of this one, I wasn't sure if I would pick it up. At first, I thought this was going to be a religious and spiritual story based on the presence of the name Hope and the mentioning of "consequences" in the blurb. It was neither of these things, and I'm so glad.
The story follows a somewhat normal girl named Hope and her strange superpower, the ability to be forgotten by everyone she ever meets in 60-120 seconds. This is both a blessing and a curse and leads to many interesting adventures and stories as the novel unfolds. As you can imagine, her life is slightly complicated due to this the circumstances of people forgetting her, and she gets caught up in something much larger than herself. I don't want to say much more than that because it's just so amazing to see this story unfold.
North's writing is magnificent and constantly captivates me making her books very hard to put down. In fact, the only reason this ended up taking me as long as it did is because I haven't been able to read many pages a day since Monday, after getting caught up in something.
Anyways, everyone should read this, it's just so fantastic and probably my favorite read of this year. I can't wait to see what else North has, especially if it centers around odd and marvelous characters.

Another wildly inventive thriller from author Claire North, this one about a woman who fades from people's memory as soon as she's out of their sight. That concept leans a bit close to North's earlier novel Touch, since the characters who forget their encounters with Hope end up losing time similarly to those who are possessed by the body thief Kepler in Touch. Still, Hope's powers allow for different exploits than Kepler's, and North considers at great length the isolation that a person like Hope would feel when unable to form any lasting human bonds. That feeling of total exile runs sharply throughout The Sudden Appearance of Hope, so it's only fitting that the central conflict revolves around a data-mining lifestyle app promising happiness and perfection through conformity. Come for the jewel thief narrator and her unique superpower; stay for the smart questions about community and individuality that a talented writer uses that character to explore.
I love Claire North. Have I mentioned it before? It should be written on stone. Her books her gold. Solid.
The Sudden Appearance of Hope is an interesting read. But Claire did refine her writing in the previous books. What do you do when someone forgets you the moment they look away? Now that's a gift I'd ask my Santa for. In reality though, you'd be lonely as hell.
But oh the possibilities of crime and one night stands!
What starts as a pretty beginning for a petty thief soon turns out to be worldwide hunt for revenge and self discovery. I loved the character of Hope Arden. In a world, where time stops for none, it stopped for her. This is a helluva tale of a single girl taking on a behemoth, making the wrong decisions, changing her life, schooling herself in discipline and above all, find a place for herself.
This is the first fiction novel where I came upon the darknet. I'm pretty sure other books cover it too but I haven't read those yet. If you do not know what the darknet is, google it and possibly stay away. I came upon darknet a couple of years ago when I was researching on some illegal ideas. Nevertheless, the dark web is free for you to wander through. But be assured, that you are being monitored. I digress.
The Sudden Appearance of Hope is a beautiful story of a girl who is capable of immeasurable things.

This was something fascinating. It took me a while to get the hang of it - but I could feel a creeping sense of truth and insight so I kept reading. It did not disappoint. This work, and it IS a work, asks so many questions and challenges you to answer them, too. What is freedom? What is right? What is Perfection?
Claire North is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

This is a fantastic book. Claire North gives her characters some weird attributes through the twist of fate and then shows how life would be, how fantastic, how lonely it would be to live the life her protagonists are forced to lead. This book is exciting, it's sad, and going into it, you know it's unreal, but it doesn't feel that way when you read it. You feel like this could happen to you too, you know.
Definitely a must-read, just like North's other books.
And one thing is for sure. You won't be able to forget, Hope. So, read and try your best.

This book took a little bit of time to get into but once you got there, woah is it good. The interlacing of facts throughout the story really enhance and make the concepts all the more scary. It makes you question humanity and the current state of the world. It makes me want to destroy all digital traces of myself and live out the rest of my days in a cabin in the woods somewhere. Beautiful, brilliant and all too close to our current reality to not feel uncomfortable.
4.5/5
This was nothing like I thought it would be, from the first pages until the last, but it was all the better for it. Definitely not your standard sci-fi!
Very unexpected and unlike anything else I've read - I'm sure I'll be picking up more of Claire North soon!
