character development

I feel this book could have been, should have been, so much better. This is the third Claire North "superpower" book I've read and I feel it's the weakest. It's slow, dragged out, repetitive (yes I get that it's a link to Hope's life but it just pushes me out of the story), and the two side by side plots/storylines just don't work. Neither feels complete, neither has a good ending, I just felt frustrated at the end. It's put me off picking up another of her books in the future.

This is the second book I've read by Claire North. Lots of similarities between the two novels despite being distinct works, both excellent and thought-provoking. While I'm sure it's being done elsewhere--hard to imagine that it's not--the conceit of the "life improvement" app "Perfection" was chilling.

DID NOT FINISH

Not what I was expecting when hearing about the premise. not for me

2017: Wow. // 4,5 stars

2020: Me, banging my head against the wall: I’m fine! I love this book! // 4,5 stars

Excellent narrator -- both the voice of the protagonist and audiobook's reader. I think my favorite thing about this book is that it basically takes what could be, maybe, three different plots for books and twines them all together into an utterly fascinating story. The ramifications of people un-rememberable are explored quite thoroughly and so much of the psychology of the characters just rings so true. I look forward to reading (or listening to) more of North's books.

I really liked this book, although at the end of it, I can't quite put my finger on why. I think the concept is quite novel, and everything that happens actually more or less makes sense in context of people forgetting Hope. That, combined with the mystery/action/heist/sci-fi just kind of hit all the right notes for me.

A book with fascinating ideas and a captivating plot. Looking forward to the next book by this author.

This is book is the story of Hope, a woman with the unusual ability (curse?) that nobody can remember her. I found this to be a fascinating story which explored this strange ability - how it developed, how it could be used, what the advantages and disadvantages would be - very well indeed. Having rediscovered this author (I previously read one her earlier YA novels, The Extraordinary and Unusual Adventures of Horatio Lyle written under her real name of Catherine Webb) I shall certainly be checking out more of her work.

My only gripe with this book and the only reason it gets four stars rather than five is that the social commentary occasionally comes too much to the fore and comes across (to me at least) as somewhat heavy handed. Other than that, an excellent read.
