Count Alexander is on house arrest in the renowned Metropol hotel across from the Kremlin. The main character Rostov passes the decades making a whole world and life out of a hotel and the people he encounters in it. He adopts as his own 9-year-old girl left behind by a famous actress. Very engaging character. Very charming book.

SO GOOD! Michael and I listened to it on audio but it expired before we finished it so we had to wait quite a while to get it again and finish it. A very satisfying ending. Did I mention it was so good? I was skeptical to read it because I didn't care for Rules of Civility but I'm so glad I read it. The audio was excellent. (Nicholas Guy Smith)

3.5 stars. This book felt right up my alley but I never got fully hooked. The premise had potential to be depressing but the Count is quite an entertaining character. The writing was wonderful and makes me interested to check out Towles’s other work.
