dunno whether this or the other bad murder mystery i read this weekish (liar’s beach—had to look up the name) was worse. this one at least had less annoying characters who disappeared from the plot for 80% of the book before being relevant at the last minute (less. not none.) and Tried to do a fakeout
but also i guessed the murderer IMMEDIATELY. and it wasn’t even hard. soooooo
anyways. wow these prophecies sure can deadly huh

As I read this, I couldn't help but think that this would be a good book to offer fans of The Inheritance Games. Magic meets murder mystery with a hint of romance.

This book was incredibly hard to put down! The pacing was done well and the characters were so natural nothing felt pressured. It was an interesting read where it is set up like an account of something that happened and it was interesting when the narrator would address the reader. It kind of grapples you further into the story and adds a sort of comedic relief you need in perfectly placed sections of the book. This book has definitely rustled me out of a longggggggg reading slump and had the perfect mystery-solving magic plot to do so!

This book was cool!
To start off, the worldbuilding and magical realism aspect of it was cool to me. Even if magic is entirely normal in the world, a teensy bit of expositing to the reader is best when the book is centered around aforementioned magic. I think this novel did a great job of integrating the magic system when I've seen so many other books fail in that exact category.
The mystery itself was serviceable. It has enough clues to be able to figure it out placed throughout the novel, but I have to criticize the actual reveal.I wasn't surprised that it was Circe and took no issue with that, but the fact that it was an illusion monster gone rogue? How were we supposed to guess that?! No matter, the mystery was enough for me to keep the page turning and the fake-out twist was super cool in my opinion. I was literally telling my friend that there was no way it was them right before reading the debunking of the fake out!
As for characters, I cared about all of them just fine. Tabatha, our MC, was fun to follow in her navigation of everything, though I was frustrated with her much.Seriously, talking to a cop when your mom's a lawyer? How did you manage to fuck that up? The one small critique I have is that Tabatha, a sorcerer's apprentice, hardly ever does any magic. Everyone else does, just not her. Other than that, she was pretty cool.
I recommend this book if you like mysteries with a hint of magic in a contemporary setting. Decent book all around.
