plot was intriguing, but i felt like the dialogue read for a much younger YA audience than what i would’ve assumed. decent book, but nothing that really captivated me.

This book was definitely YA, the main characters were still in high school and definitely had their angst in full swing. With that being said the classic whodunit will never get old for me, so even if a lot of the book was meant for a younger audience I could still appreciate the plot. Lots of things felt predictable in the book, the forgotten daughter, Circe, was the obvious culprit for her father’s death. It turns out she was responsible but it was due to a creature being created from one of her spells gone wrong that ended up murdering Julian (her dad) and later Hester. They kept repeating over and over how she would just shut herself in her room and that she was an unbelievable talented illusionist. Yeah there’s nothing fishy about a recluse illusionist who never interacts with her family. I also really didn’t believe the twist at the end that Callum was responsible for it all. Which ended up just being Circe using her illusion skills to pretend to be Callum but it really just wasn’t believable at all.

It was an alright book, would I recommend it? Probably not. But it was worth finishing. The story was simple and easy to follow.

Fun little mystery! The pacing was a bit off at times but I enjoyed it and the twists.

I Iove how the training trope snuck in there. Cute ya
