The great thing about historical fiction is learning about things that I know nothing about - such as leprosy in the US - and encouraging me to find out more through further reading or internet searches. I thought that some of the plot elements in this book were predictable, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

I read this as a buddy read and was very intrigued when I read the summary. A lot of people are not aware of Carville in Louisiana. This where those with leprosy were sent because at the time there was no treatment for the disease. The stigma those with leprosy experienced is truly saddening. While I loved the historical aspect, our main character fell flat for me. She is selfish and showed limited character growth until the end. Even then, it felt forced and rushed. I enjoyed some aspects of this book but it was not a favorite of mine. I appreciate the author and the research she put into it. I just wish I could’ve cared about our character more.

I read it because I was interested in leprosy and I learned a lot about a time in history not so long ago and how terrible the disease was as well as the stigma and cultural treatment.
Unfortunately, the story was very much "Hallmark Channel" and it seemed too long and too many predictable outcomes. It was an easy read, just not riveting by any means.

Interesting historical fiction. The subject matter is uncomfortable, and I have lots of questions about what was real (formost: were there really children there with no one to take care of them?). I'm going to assume that the book is well researched and trust it. It's a good read!

Audiobook review: this was a slow paced yet interesting story of leparcy.  I didn’t know much about it and enjoyed the learning woven in with one woman’s story.
