This book tells the heartbreaking tale of a leper colony in the early 1900s, and the way the disease wrecked people and families. The story has depth and emotion, clearly written with fact and research. While not necessarily a bad thing, I did find it to be a slow read and just took me a long time to get through. However, the epilogue was my favorite part!
A beautifully written book! I wish I could give it 4 and a half stars as some parts dragged on for me.

I knew very little about leprosy before reading this book. Though it is fiction, it is inspired by truth and history. It taught me more about leprosy as a disease and stigma. I enjoyed learning about Carville, and I fell in love with many of the characters. Especially Jean and Irene. I really enjoyed this book!

Although the subject was new to me and interesting, I just felt like the characters were a bit flat.

The Second Life of Mirielle West by Amanda Skenandore was a tough read for me. Set in 1920s Los Angeles, socialite Mirielle West is a stereotypical spoiled and self-obsessed wife of a silent movie star, and mother of two daughters.
As the title infers, her second life begins when she is diagnosed with leprosy and exiled from her glamourous life in California to live in a leper colony in Louisiana.
The book is well-researched and well-written, but I struggled connecting to it, even with Mirielle’s eventual inspiring transformation.
Also, the book was too long IMO. I could have done without all of Mirielle’s pity parties, although I certainly understood them.
I learned a lot from the book as I did not know much about leprosy, colonies or the heartbreaking stigma they were subjected to.
The audiobook was narrated by Nicole Poole who did an excellent job.

I found Murielle over the top insufferable. I understand that this is part of her hero's journey but she's too selfish, clueless and annoying to even care about.
