I thought this was a good book that covers a subject matter that I don't come across often. The characters were all interesting and well-developed for the most part. There was some information repeated more than once in the story, as if the reader didn't already know this info- that got a bit annoying- but it was tolerable. Overall a great story!
Fantastic book. Learned so much about leprosy and how it was treated medically and socially in the late 1920s in America. It's not actually as contagious as believed but the stigma of the disease was awful. Great plot, characters, and writing.
In 1926, Mirielle West is the wife of a famous actor and living in California, but is suffering from the death of her son. When she starts noticing blisters on her skin, she is referred to a hospital in Louisiana. The hospital is a place for those with leprosy. Mirielle is angry and doesn't want to accept the diagnosis. However, Mirielle is given work in the infirmary along the nuns. The patients and staff work together to make the colony a hopeful place, having celebrations and social events. Mirielle desperately missing her 2 daughters and husband and longs to be home with them. However, lepers are not to be in with the rest of society.
As Mirielle begins to make friends and care about the others in the colony, her perspective changes. A young girl, Jean, tugs at her heart, and a man, Frank, shows interest in her. She resists, but after something happens, Mirielle begins to understand what she needs to do to have hope.
I thought the author did a great job of explaining the various feelings one would have when diagnosed with a disease that at the time had no cure. I felt for Mirielle and all her difficulties struggling with her feelings and her longing for her family. I appreciated the relationships and how real they were, the anger and the love. Great story.
