what a journey holy hell. i cried so many times. this was written and drawn so well and it felt so personal and so real and the ability for the author to look into themself and admit their monstrous side,,,, and the last few pages where
we get to see an older version of themself holding a baby version of themself……aughhfjfhhhsjdjf

Graphic novel about adoptee born in South Korea and raised in middle America USA. Awful childhood. Racism and bigotry abound, made worse by the author Sarah being different in other ways- energetic, artistic, kinda weird, into fringe culture, later queer.

Heartbreaking to see kid-author get hurt emotionally and later physically over and over with no adults (save the adoptive parents) even noticing.

Can’t pay me any amount of money to go back to high school

Unfortunately, though the art was great and at times quite beautiful, the writing was incredibly rudimentary and lacking in any real complexity or unique lens. So many lines were jarringly cliche and on the nose. It really hammers its points over and over and over again. Felt incredibly juvenile and simplistic.
