I have incredibly mixed feelings on this book, and my feelings kept changing the more I read on. That said, I think May did a good job of showing the raw feelings of grief and desire for revenge that fuelled Aileena and how soul-crushingly lonely and desperate she was.

To go into further detail on my conflicting feelings and some points of contention:

  • Although I liked how Aileena felt trapped by societal convention and pressured into marriage, there were points where she came across as having a bit of a "not like other girls" attitude. They were pretty minor, however, and I can overlook them because, overall, I did relate to how it felt like Aileena was in a whole other world separate from most of the population.
  • The steampunk elements were pretty cool, I just wish there was more of an explanation of how they came to be and how they function (e.g. where do the materials come from; what is the history behind the ornithopter etc.)
  • I'm not a big fan of love triangles to begin with, but I felt the love triangle was a bit half baked and didn't really go anywhere. It kind of felt like it was added for the sake of having a love triangle in the book.
  • I hate how it ended on a cliffhanger! And right as the "war" was about to begin!
