I really don't care for cliffhangers! Thank goodness the 2nd half picked up for a good adventure, fights, and some low angst romance or I would have given up. Worth continuing on with the series.

This was alright. I would highly recommend it to some of my middle school students. The main character is vulnerable and grieving but also strong and capable. And there's great fae stuff happening.

Overall though it is simple. The plot is simple. Many of the characters lack development. Some of the discussion of Kairan's fae nature was intriguing but it didn't go much deeper than that. There was a lot of action but that also felt superficial.

I will read the next one because it's a fun, light read.

I liked the plot development, as in a proper series, it only slowly unfolds with time to add more depth and over several books (and this one does that). Characters slowly gain more depth, and the characters develop banter and depth between them.

It felt however a bit like in the present, rather than in 1840; the main character did neither speak, behave nor have the mindset of what we associate with that day and age, given they are part of a traditional aristocratic society. Thus adding the steampunk elements in there, that character building and sharp banter between her and men then started to make much more sense to me (apart from the fae/traumatic experiences ofc).

Currently already reading book 2

This was an odd book. The characters were cliche, the whole plot of the story didn’t occur until the last three chapters, and there were no character arcs (except a little bit of Kiaran). It wasn’t terrible to read. In fact, it kept me flipping through the pages and had a good amount of action in it. The characters and overall story just didn’t have as much depth as I wanted. There are two more books in the series, and although The Falconer ended on a major cliffhanger, I won’t be reading the other books. Overall, this book wasn’t for me, so I’m giving it a 3/5 stars.

The story is good, and the cliffhanger has left me wanting to read the next one, but I got quite annoyed with the writing style and Alienna as a character.

The world building to me, is written so beautifully. It was like watching a movie in my head which I love when I read. You can’t help, but be captured by the storyline and side characters, especially one. He’s my favorite!
