We are all part of the same story, each of us different chapters. We may not have the power to choose setting or plot, but we can choose what kind of character we want to be.

There are books you read for the plot, and books you read for the characters, and books you read for the words, and at the intersection of this venn diagram, is this book. I listened to this book as an audiobook, and I wish I had read it instead because there are so many quotes I wish I could have underlined and stored away.

I've read books with similar story arcs before--the quest for closure after the death of a loved one aided by a post-humous letter and the unraveling of a crime as we revisit the days leading up to it--but Kids of Appetite was a "super racehorse" of a book that charmingly wove the two together. (Except for the part where Victor repeats "I am a super racehorse" a hundred times--that part was not a super racehorse, in my opinion. Props to Michael Crouch for reading the same sentence a hundred times in the audiobook.)

The Outsiders meets The Breakfast Club. “Till we’re old-new” is one of my new favorite sayings. From the quirks of these characters to their harsh realities and true honesty, this was an appetizing read to say the least.

A cute, unusual story about some misfit kids. Kinda reminds me of The Breakfast Club and Maximum Ride, but also very unlike either of those too. David Arnold is always so awesome for writing about kids that seem to have wisdom beyond their years.

It's not often that I read a book and think "This would be great as a movie." But David Arnold has included a number of really compelling scenes, both in terms of the settings, and the character interactions within them. He has created such a diverse cast in this story. And I love books with characters with life circumstances I know nothing about - which isn't common. Most of the time I know stuff about it - even if I don't necessarily understand the experience. But our main character, Victor, has Moebius syndrome - a congenital facial paralysis - and so hey. I learnt stuff!

The kids of appetite struggled through many obstacles to ultimately try and help each other out. The bonds that are formed through need or youth are often the most unshakeable and most genuine. 97
