While I couldn't relate or understand a lot of the struggles of lusting for someone you shouldn't be with (as an autistic aroace and previously only ace person, it's hard to me NOT to distinguish sexual attraction from romantic attraction), I can see the beauty of the book as a whole and I would recommend it to a lot of people going through a harsh breakup.

2.75 or 3 on a good day

this is the first poetry book i finished, I'll admit it was a bit hard to go through and the format of the poems make me put it down a lot

but the beginning and end parts raised my star rating a bit because, you can dislike this collection. rupi kaur implies it at the end. but u have to acknowledge that it is a reflection of her inner self her life in multiple phases, in a way that she wants in more accessible language. if u dont like it then it's fine, this is just not for you. there are tons of people who can relate to this collection and be happy with it

with that being said, this collection is not for me. still, im not too much of a poetry hardass to dismiss this form of poetry

I don’t think it’s bad, overall, but I don’t feel like it reads as poetry. While some “poems” are inspiring and resonated with me, and you can tell Rupo Kaur really put a lot of raw and vulnerable stories in here, some things read as just cliché words of wisdom. There doesn’t appear to be any structure and minimal flow to the poems, which make it awkward to read, but I still enjoyed and bookmarked pieces where the message was really thoughtful and impactful for me.

These poems are a journey to healing, and they start off really heavy. Like, incest and childhood sexual abuse in the first chapter heavy.

The four chapters are the four stages of the journey. Chapter one is abuse and trauma in the past that affected the author's (or perhaps character's - it's not completely clear how much Rupi is writing from her own experience) ability to form and maintain romantic and sexual relationships. Chapter two is the relationship - intense feelings and deep love on the author's part, with hints that all is not as perfect as it seems. Chapter three is the breakup and the author grieving while realizing that the relationship was actually unhealthy. And chapter four is healing and recovery.

The poems are good and have some really poignant lines. I was just taken off guard by some of the content. Such as all the incest and sexual abuse, but also a remarkable amount of consensual sexual content too. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I am not huge into reading sexual content and also was not expecting it. So if you read this, go into it prepared. That said, it was a quick and enjoyable read, so if you're prepared for some of the content, you'll probably enjoy it.

2017 read: Up until I got to the healing, I thought this was going to be a four star read. I think I still prefer classic poetry to modern poetry overall. But this ended up being just fantastic. Heart wrenching and overwhelmingly simplistic and beautiful. I thought that the sketches on the right pages were a lovely touch. 5 stars.

2022 reread:

Style/writing: 3 stars
Themes: 3.5 stars
Perspective: 3 stars
