The first time I read a book dedicated to poetry and cried at some poems, because they touched my heart. Some poems gut punch you, think and reflect, and others bring hope.

A perfect embodiment of cliched wisdom, wrapped in the pretentious veil of artistry.

Kaur Rupi's poetry, despite its widespread popularity, falls disappointingly short of literary excellence. Its cliched wisdom, random breaks, and pretentious style create a reading experience that is rather disappointing and intellectually unsatisfying. It lacks the depth and substance necessary to engage with sensitive subjects, leaving the reader with nothing more than hollow and sometimes harmful ideas.

This book is a slap across the face.

some poems are very raw and detached, others are more kind and self-forgiving.

Every women should read this book. Loved it!

I can see why people like it but it really wasn’t for me. Majority of the poems didn’t feel meaningful. It felt like a book full of Pinterest and tumblr quotes. The amount of times sex was mentioned was alarming. No one said anything about there being sex mentioned every other page but it was there. There was maybe 1 or 2 that I liked but the others were bleh.

i stand
on the sacrifices
of a million women before me thinking
what can i do
to make this mountain taller so the
women after me
can see further

I came across this poem and instantly wanted to read more of Rupi Kaur's work.
I can see how this collection is relatable for a lot of young women, I found the first section "the hurting" quite moving and I really liked the illustrations. I also enjoyed some of her poems on feminism in the last section. I did not expect this book to be so graphic and explicit though. Overall, there are some nice lines but none of the ideas were new and it started to feel a bit repetitive after a while. No rating because it's clearly very personal to the writer.
