Mmmmm? It's different to the tv show and I prefer the tv show but I liked the art work it was exactly what I was expecting. Blood guts and many more amazing artwork. I might pick the rest of them, not to sure at this stage.

zombies aren't normally my thing, but I enjoyed this take on them.

I went in to this knowing that it wouldn't be anything like the tv show, which happens to be a favourite of mine. But I didn't know how completely different it would be.

But I did enjoy this immensely. I am glad I didn't go in to this thinking it would be the same.

Gwen is a gravedigger, with her best friend Ellie, who happens to be a ghost from the 60's, and Scott (aka Spot), who is a were-terrier. Gwen must eat a brain once a month to keep from turning in to a shambling mindless zombie.. so with her job as a gravedigger, she keeps that from happening. With that brain, she gets visions and feelings and emotions from that person, and must settle something for them.

There are also vampires, a mummy, and monster hunters.

I decided to read this first volume because I saw the trailers for the new show based on the series. Correctly I assumed that the show would deviate from the text (Don't they almost always?) In the show, I guess Gwen will be a medical resident, whereas here in this first volume it is clear that she is a gravedigger. Both are decent occupations for a zombie, seeing as how in the show she helps out in the morgue? I don't know; haven't watched the pilot yet.

Anyway...the art was good, but I don't exactly know if I got enough meat/depth for the cast of characters. Vol 1 includes the first 5 issues of this comic book series. It was decently interesting, especially considering the cast of characters zombie Gwen hangs out with: a ghost and a were-terrier, with vampires and mummies included to round out the supernatural world.

I don't know if I'll read any more. I'm going to watch the show though, just to see if it's any good. I'm just not really a fan of zombies in any medium. Still, I decided it would be worth it to give this decently interesting concept a shot. I'm sure if you like zombies then this might appeal to you.

3.5 Stars. A more than solid start to a series with a lot of potential. Really digging the art and ancient cultural and mythological references. Being set in my backyard is pretty darn nifty as well.

Great art. The story and characters are OK. Sometimes it seems like the writing is trying to hard to be hipster or kitsch. Overall worth the read if you enjoy interesting twists on classic horror characters. This is a very slow character driven story so if you like you comics to be page turners this may not be for you.

This was good, I loved the artwork in it, but the dozens of different myths and characters lost me at times.

I was very happy that I knew going in that the show is completely different from the comic, but somehow I didn't expect "completely different" to be… so different. Literally the only thing that is the same between the two is that there is a girl who is a zombie and when she eats brains she temporarily gets the memories of the person whose brains she ate. That's it.
