Great Read
This was an enjoyable read. This is the first book in the Harriet the Spy series. In this book, we are introduced to Harriet, who “observes” people during her spy route and makes notes about her neighbours, parents and friends in her spy journal. When her journal is discovered, her classmates decide ro retaliate and started to make her the outcast. I read this book for my challenge. I thought the story was intriguing. I did not read the book before today, but I am glad that I did pick it up. I listened to the audiobook, and the way the narration of the story was great. I found it to be funny when we got to the moments when Harriet was reading/writing in her notebook. She was so blunt and obnoxious. However, I think the story showed the painful side of being a child as well. I thought this when her notebook was found, it showed how she become an outcast because of the stuff she had written. I think anyone who has felt like an outcast can relate. I thought Sport was the best character. I am looking forward to reading more from this series. Book 2, here I come. Overall, a great read.

I don't know why I hadn't read this before! It's charming.
This classic children's novel was NOT one I read as a child. It came to my attention recently as it was the focus of a Horn Book. I determined, based on the description in the articles that this young lady (Harriet M. Welsh) was one I needed to know and, again based on the Horn Book articles, I would like.
Sadly I was disappointed. Harriet didn't draw me in as I had hoped. Her writing and observations were traits I enjoyed but not fully as I found her a rude child. The storyline drug for me making the motivation to read farther the hope it would "pick up."
Sorry, all, Harriet is not for me.

I didn't read this as a child because, according to my childhood parish, reading a banned book is clearly a sin. My classmates and I were encouraged to watch the movie instead, as that wasn't such a bad influence. Now that I've read the book, I understand more fully why we were discouraged from reading it - it sure is sinful!
The writing is bumpy, but so is Harriet and therefore it works well. The characters, however deep or shallow, are magnetic through Harriet's inquisitive and benignly judgmental eyes. The statements of rich vs. poor, normal vs. bizarre, individual vs. brown-noser are both striking and insightful. At times it's very dark, which enriches the entire experience of the book.
Overall I enjoyed the book, and I don't think it takes away from the much-loved film.
