Rhystan acted irrationally with his bitter resentment about Sarani and his subsequent mean treatment of her made the book hard for me to enjoy. I don't mind reading about unlikable anti-heros as protagonists but nothing about Rhystan compelled me to enjoy his character, save for his love toward his scene-stealing younger sister Ravenna. The only reason I even rated this novel two stars was because I loved and adored Sarani as a protagonist.
