small boy awakens to find a train outside his door that takes him to the North Pole. He is given a bell of Santa's sleigh, but he looses it before he returns home. He awakens Christmas Morning to find the bell on the tree.

my very favorite christmas story ever...we have been reading as a family ever since I can remember! BELIEVE

I'm often afraid to revisit this book because it just makes me too damn sad.

Five stars for how much I loved it as a kid. This was a staple readaloud at my elementary school. Looking again at the pictures, I'm thinking they surely influenced the visuals of the first Harry Potter movie: the train, the mountains, the kids. I still remember the rather haunting ending to this.
hopeful lighthearted fast-paced

WAOW thats was short and sweet, and so lovely! definitely can see how the movie took the source material and expanded on it immensely

the story itself, and the way it's written, reminds me a bit of the little prince (one of my favourite books, though i owe it a proper re-read).

As beautiful and simple as I remembered it.

This was the book that my reading specialist gave me when I finished my time with her...funny that the kid that couldn't read now reads sooooo much.

Lovely Christmas story. Be warned if you have seen the movie. The book is not as long as you think it might be. Best way to read a book where you have already seen the movie is to drop all expectations and previous judgments and just enjoy.

I was surprise to find it was different from the movie. I enjoyed the narration by Liam Neeson. I see why people enjoy the book.

I started doing a thing with my homeroom students where I read them a children's book every Monday. None of them knew that Polar Express was a book--they all knew the movie. I couldn't remember ever reading the book (I like Chris Van Allsburg, but I'd only read lesser-known works of his). So I read this to my class. In April. They enjoyed it.
