I had never seen this book until the movie came out, so I never read this to my children, but I did find it in the library and "read" it. The illustrations are so beautiful, rich and detailed, it's enough to make a person weep.
I never read this book as a kid, and it's odd to read it in the middle of summer, but an insistent Mini-Me meant a couple of readings. A sweet story that I'll probably like even better when it's not 25 above outside. :)
adventurous
hopeful
inspiring
lighthearted
I can understand how this book would need to be livened up a bit for a big Hollywood production, as it was, but man, the movie loses a lot for being so hectic. While, yes, the movie entertains, it doesn't feel quite so...spiritual, I think is the word I want. It's a child's adventure movie dipped in Christmas, whereas this book is a serving of winter infused with the feel of Christmas. It's slow and calming and a great way to get your child both excited for Christmas morning, and restful enough to sleep until dawn. So long as they don't try to catch any mysterious trains appearing at their front door.
The notion of finding that one meaningful gift is also an important theme. It's not a book about the spirit of giving, but about deeply appreciating the Christmas season itself.
Well worth owning for any household that celebrates Christmas, and especially a more secular Christmas. There's no overt religious iconography, unless you're one of those people that rant on about the cult of Santa. And, if you don't buy, your library probably has a half-dozen copies!

Ugh! What is this? Why is this so popular?
The illustrations are bleak and so depressing, many are devoid of people like an empty, dead stage set. When there are people, they look like weird, uncanny valley manikins, gurning at each other with dead eyes in a desperate attempt to appear human. We get to Father Christmas place at the north pole and its some horrible red brick factory from the industrial revolution. The faceless elves flock the streets like a zombie horde.
This is going to give me nightmares.

This is honestly better if you check out the narrated version on youtube by Liam Neeson.

I'm rating this separate from the movie, since I love the movie so much and this...well...
It wasn't bad, to be completely honest. It was actually quite good, like a short story found in an English textbook section.
Other than that, I didn't feel anything for it.

I watched the movie first and then read the book. Both are good.
