I like this book, overall. I love that it is based on a true story, and the illustrations keep little ones engaged. The book is non-rhyming which is not as intriguing to lower elementary students, but it's a great book to use with upper elementary to introduce the Dewey Decimal System in a fun way! It's a staple title in my library curriculum.
An adorable picture book about the real library cat from Iowa: Dewey Readmore Books. I loved the adult non-fiction tale and was entertained by the juv interpretation. The book included cute drawings as well.

This book is great! The illustrations are incredibly cute and the story is both adorable and accurate to cats.
It's the illustrations, they kill me.
But anytime I think about Dewey I think about how a kitten/cat would fare in the public library I work in... it would not end well.

I read Dewey (the original book) when I was in the hospital after giving birth to my daughter, and she LOVES cats. So I thought this children's version would be great to share with my kids. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful!!
While this is a sweet adaptation of the original story as someone who loves cats and works in a library I can only think about the many horrible, torturous things that our patrons might do to a sweet dewey cat. Maybe it worked in a small town, but I don't trust people enough.
