I might have liked this book if I’d read it at 15, but the characters are too petty and too stupid to actually care about. I liked this series back in high school, but I even back then I couldn’t imagine people actually acting like these characters.

Okay so...

I enjoyed the book, and it fit well with what's going on in the series.

Spoilers below:

My running theory is that "Courtney"'s boyfriend in The Preserve she introduces as Tripp, but we don't meet him.

Coincidentally, a random boy shows up at Rosewood Day introducing himself as Nick from summer camp. Knowing Ali would go for any chance she had to one-up her sister, "Courtney" has Nick/Tripp make up a story about how he rejected her then so Ali would go for him.

In the end, Nick/Tripp shows up when real Ali pushes old Ali into the hole. That is her accomplice. Enter "A" team which was introduced at the end of Burned. Nick/Tripp is out to avenge Real Ali's death from the Poconos (if she died) *or* they're in it together to avenge Tabitha's death etc. therefore, Nick/Tripp was the guy that was in the boiler room with Aria and Tabitha'a ex.

Thoughts?
medium-paced

{my thoughts} - This book is helpful in only one way. It helps to clearly point out mildly what had happened the night that Alison/Courtney had died. This is basically an account of what had happened leading up to that night, the next day and so on. It helps as a means of giving closure to some of the readers who have been wanting to know what exactly happened that night. However, it also opens up more questions. I do have to hand it to the author. She certainly knows how to grip the audience and keep the mystery alive by only revealing minimal clues in each of the books.

{reason for reading} - I have been reading the series for so long, I was curious to find out Ali's point of view.

Wow. First of all: don't read this book until you have some idea of who, exactly, "A" might be. Otherwise, the rest of the PLL books just aren't going to be the same.

Next. First off, Shepard does a great job not painting characters in black and white. Is it Ali or Courtney that is evil? Is it both? Are they really two separate people?

Finally. Shepard is just fantastic, in this book in particular, at capturing the nuances of teen female relationships (and really, some of that carries over into adulthood as well). You wonder why the girls stay friends with Ali, when she's obviously manipulative, conniving and desperate for attention, but then you see Ali do something sweet or gentle or kind and you get it. And you remember back to your own junior high or high school days and similar friendships come to mind.
