Note to self: Pretty sure I read this book but and traded it in, but if I find it packed in a box then I may not have read it....
adventurous informative sad slow-paced

I had to read this book for my AP Lit class. My feelings towards this book were mixed, and if I had read this out of class I feel like I would have disliked it more. Because of our extensive analysis of the weather, environment, characters, settings, etc I was able to understand the beauty of this novel. There were times when I felt that the details were dragging on and on, and I felt my mind just wanting to skip through them, but they ultimately meant something. My favorite part of this book was the ending. It didn't specifically say what happened, it kept it somewhat open-ended, and the ending scene with Ada reading the story was beautiful in itself. Although Ada and Inman didn't end up together, they would still grow with each other like the tree Ada noted in the story she was reading to the children.
challenging emotional reflective sad slow-paced

My favorite passage is, I think, thematic of the many odysseys detailed in this incredible book: "To Ada, though, it seemed akin to miracle that Stobrod, of all people, should offer himself up as proof positive that no matter what a waste one has made of one's life, it is ever possible to find some path to redemption, however partial."
challenging medium-paced

If you love historical fiction, you can't miss out on this book!

This book alternates perspectives between a deserting confederate soldier and his sweetheart back on the farm. There are better “man on a journey” books and better “woman on a farm” books and far better love stories. I enjoyed perhaps 50 pages and was bored out of my mind by the other 400. The use of the N word is liberal and the bucolic atmosphere does little to condemn it. There is a “both sides are bad” attitude toward the civil war here that was lazy in the 90s and even more painfully stupid now. Don’t waste your time with this, it’s not worth the read.
