I guess people aren’t fond of this book but I loved it! I love lore, character building, and getting a deeper glimpse of a universe we only see part of. There is so much more than Katniss and her games and I think this book really tells the tale of president snow and why he is the way he is essentially. The songs were great too. Love seeing origins of songs from district 12 and the covey. I wish we could know more about the covey but that’s a part of their charm. Beautiful and elusive.
I really enjoyed this book — the character arc of Snow from an insecure people pleaser to a desperate, paranoid, kid in ruins, to the smug, self-important future president was really intriguing, and the slips from one to the next felt so natural, Suzanne Collins did such a good job. It was also cool to see that Snow had so many parallels with Katniss’s childhood, with so many choices that make them great foils of each other. What was interesting is that Snow and Katniss seemed to have similar but opposite ideas about love/their love. Both of them used love in the arena for similar causes — but Snow started with a more genuine feeling of love before it morphed into something about self-preservation and control, while Katniss started out faking her love for survival and control in the games until it became genuine. Interesting to see those opposite parallels. The songs were also really well done!

this book put me in such a slump. i barely ever wanted to pick it up even though i was into it once i started reading, but it was so easy to put down. reading the first two parts i hated snow bc of how he was in the original trilogy, but i didn’t really start hating him in his book until part three. there was a couple of things that he said and then he just kept contradicting himself and doing the opposite. i think a very small part of him wanted to be good but he was so brainwashed from the capitol that he couldn’t change his ways. since the capitol is such a controlled environment once things were out of control he didn’t know how to handle it which is why he acted the way he did. originally i was gonna give this book 2.5 stars because i wasn’t invested in the book until the last 70 pages but they made up for it.
Nothing will hurt you and start your villain origin story quite like a teenage situationship
