First and foremost this book has mentions of SA.

The story follows along the murder of a magical bird and a sister trying to clear her family name.

This was an easy, yet heavy read and I’m glad I picked it up. The magical realism didn’t take away from the storyline and the plot almost felt real.

This book went by too fast! It reads like a light, magical summer read in the vein of Practical Magic (which the author acknowledges as an influence), but also contains deeper threads of sexual autonomy, coming into one's power, and of course, coming of age.

I loved the setting (every description of By-The-Sea is so evocative) and the characters (Vira as ice cream goth asexual rep) but the plot was a bit predictable to me? This is a YA book that may be meant more for actual young adults than for adults who want a light read. Which, valid.

"I think a person can be a home, sometimes, just as much as a place or a house can."

"Summer of Salt" by Katrina Leno ended up being a 5 star read for me, which I did not expect. I thought it would be a light summer read, and while it definitely worked as a summer read, it also dealt with some tougher topics.

I absolutely loved all the characters and the uniqueness of the island that they live on. The overarching mystery kept me invested throughout the book and I absolutely loved the fantasy elements woven into the story. There's also a very sweet sapphic romance, which made me swoon.

So yeah, I highly recommend this book, especially if you enjoy magical realism, sapphic romance, and interesting characters. I know this book is gonna stick with me for a long time.
