The Dentist is a really enjoyable police procedural. The fact that DS Cross has Asperger’s makes him a memorable character and one I enjoyed getting to know. The narrative was clever, the characters were well rounded and a joy to read. This is definitely a series that I will be looking our for.

The fact that DS Cross was tolerated so much was very surprising. Well I mean in the present - we do hear of him being bullied at the start of his career. How he managed on the beat I have no idea. The author has researched Aspergers extremely well as Cross across as a fully formed character and extremely believable with his syndrome. I loved this relationship with his father and that his partner at work tried to hard to understand him.

The plot line was really well done. A homeless man is found murdered on the Downs and has links to Bristol and another murder 15 years ago. Cross has to deal with his old boss who has now retired as he worked on the first murder. I liked how the storyline played out and in the end I kind of felt sorry for all of those involved.

Cross is going to be one of those characters you either love or hate. I loved him. I found it refreshing that it wasn’t another detective with a divorce and a drinking habit. I enjoyed his character, his determination and his affection for his father.

The Dentist is the first in this series and I am certainly going to read them as they get released. Don’t you love when you are one of the first ones to find and a series and then you can be smug about it to others! I think this is going to be the case here!
